The Fifty-Fifth Annual State Fair, held by the North Carolina Agricultural Society at Raleigh, North Carolina ran from the eighteenth to the twenty-third of October. This year marked the first year in which the fair accepted entries from all over the state. The report, written by E. J. Parrish, is an informative and exciting description of the events which took place.The report begins with a description of the entrance and grounds, noting the large number of people that had come out in celebration. A detailed list of the categories represented, such as Industrial, Appropriations, and Home Manufactures, was included as well. The highlights of day one of the fair began with an awarding of premiums to exhibitors, followed by a pageant honoring the ancient Romans and their agricultural exploits.The second day was a “grand fete of literature and the Arts.” It included lectures, music, and the awarding of prizes to competitors of the Children’s Literature division. The third day was reserved for livestock exhibitors and their entries. There were also contests for horse racing and a equestrian drill.On the fourth day, there was a grand procession featuring floats from various parts of the state. A special exhibit of war relics from the Spanish-American War was also on the docket. On the fifth day, special events included art exhibitions and a “model fruit kitchen.” An address from the Governor followed, and the fair concluded with a grand display of fireworks.This report of the Fifty-Fifth Annual State Fair offered much more than one might have expected.
